’24’ – Seasons 1-3: The David Palmer Presidency (Part 1)

Posted August 8, 2011 by @Angelized_1st in 24 / 0 Comments

Every summer I marathon some of my favorite television shows. This summer, I have re-watched ‘LOST’, and ‘Supernatural.’ After finally getting my hands on the last 2 seasons of ’24’, I decided to have a marathon of the entire series. For those of you who have never watched, ’24’ is about a federal agent named Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) who will stop at nothing to accomplish is missions. Each season shows a day in his life that has been the longest day ever. ’24’ is highly implausible, improbable, and is the craziest television show ever! But this is why we love it! Jack Bauer does what we only wish heroes of our other shows would do. This is my recap of the first 3 seasons of FOX’s now defunct adrenaline rush, which I term “The David Palmer Presidency.”

Who is David Palmer?

Dennis Haysbert is now known as the Allstate man, but fans of ’24’ remember him as the First Black President – David Palmer. In season 1, we saw David Palmer run for the United States Presidency, and Jack had to defend him against a threat that was on his life. This was groundbreaking television at its best! A black man in a leading role on a major television network, and cast as President.

Season 2 (6 months later) shows President Palmer having to deal with a pending nuclear attack on the city of Los Angeles. Not only does he have to deal with saving a major metropolitan city, but also with the fall out of his divorce, and his son’s legal drama.

In Season 3, we see the President three years later heading his re-election campaign, dealing with his social climbing ex-wife (Penny Johnson), and yet another disaster to be released on the citizens of Los Angeles. Personally, I feel the acceptance of Dennis Haysbert as President Palmer is one of the reasons we have a real-life black President today! Now that you know who President Palmer is, let’s break ope ’24’.

When Exes Attack!

Jack Bauer is called to his office because there’s a threat on the life of a US Senator who’s running for President; Jack also discovers that his daughter has skipped out her bedroom window.

Season 1 gives us a first in television: Real-time viewing. As we watch a day-in-the-life of Agent Jack Bauer, time clicks away in our own lives. Each episode is just one hour, and each season has 24 hours. Jack’s day is the day from hell which most of us would not survive.

While Jack deals with the impending Assassination against Palmer, he also is battling his personal problems. One comes majorly in the form of his co-worker, and ex-lover Nina Myers (Sarah Clarke). This personal drama parallels what President Palmer is also experiencing.

My name is Jack Bauer, and this is the longest day of my life.”

’24’ is an action packed show, that never lets you out of its grip until the very end.

  • A young Misha Collins as a bad-guy.
  • A major twist no one sees coming.

[Phone conversation]
Vincent: Hello?
Jack Bauer: Vincent, Jack Bauer. You planning on seeing Kimberly tonight?
Vincent: No way, man. We broke up, you know that.
Jack Bauer: I just wanted to make sure you knew that.
Vincent: Chill, man. I don’t know where she is. You’ve got my word.
Jack Bauer: That’s a real comfort, Vincent, knowing I’ve got your word.

Jack Bauer: You can look the other way once, and it’s no big deal, except it makes it easier for you to compromise the next time, and pretty soon that’s all your doing; compromising, because that’s the way you think things are done. You know those guys I busted? You think they were the bad guys? Because they weren’t, they weren’t bad guys, they were just like you and me. Except they compromised… Once.

Tony Almeida: You mind telling me what’s going on around here tonight?
Jack Bauer: What’s going on? You mean besides a 747 falling out of the sky and a threat on a presidential candidate’s life?
Tony Almeida: Yeah, besides that.

Greg Penticoff: No more questions without my lawyer.
Jack Bauer: [Ignoring him] Who are you working for?
Greg Penticoff: Are you deaf? I said no questions without my lawyer.
Jack Bauer: [Snickers] Your lawyer can kiss my ass.

Jack Bauer: I have killed two people since midnight. I haven’t slept in over 24 hours. So maybe you should be a little more afraid of me than you are now.
