Book Review: Beautiful Creatures

Beautiful CreaturesOne of the books I’ve read this holiday season is Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. I had this book on my wishlist for some time, but when I discovered it was going to be a movie I got right on it. This book is a fish out of water story about a young girl named Lena Duchannes who moves to the small town of Gatlin. Lena has difficulty fitting in because her family are the town weirdos. The only friend Lena makes is a popular young man named Ethan Wate who is going through a hard time of his own. In the synopsis according to Amazon:

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.

Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.

In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

This book was well written, but moved very slowly. In the story, Lena has just over 175 days before her family curse takes effect. Though the characters are rushing to free Lena from her fate, the writing makes it difficult for the reader to feel their urgency. In my opinion, the book could have been condensed. If some of the chapters without much character development, or plot advancement were removed, I believe it would allow the reader to feel the same panic the characters do. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but I’m not in a hurry to read the next novel in the series. As for the upcoming movie which hits theaters on February 13, 2013, check out the movie trailer below!
