Rise And Be Counted
On Wednesday, July 17th, FOX Television screened their new upcoming science fiction drama, Almost Human, at 2013 San Diego Comic-Con for attendees lucky enough to obtain the coveted 4-day convention pass. This new series stars Karl Urban (Star Trek: Into Darkness), Michael Ealy (Common Law), and Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), and is created by J.H. Wyman (Fringe). In the year 2046, John Kennex (Urban) survived an attack that landed him in a 17-month coma minus a leg. Now awake, Kennex is outfitted with a synthetic leg, suffers from depression, and finds himself partnered with a robot, Dorian (Ealy), who is part-human. As the two learn to work together, Kennex struggles to regain his list memories, and adjust to the big changes he faces at work.

The relationship between Kennex and Dorian are at the heart of this series. John battles with his dislike of androids, and the fact he is now partly one of them due to the accident he suffered a year and a half ago, with having an android partner. Now that it’s officially mandated that all human police officers must partner with an android, Kennex has no way around working with Dorian. Dorian, who is partly human, must deal with working with a partner who is averse to working with him, or any robot, and somehow find a way to gain Kennex’s trust. This aspect of the show isn’t something we haven’t seen before (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, anyone?), but what makes it seem fresh is watching Kennex struggle with the fact that he is physically similar to Dorian due to the cybernetic appendage that’s replaced his leg.
