Hell is looking for a way to break loose...

Jax lost the genetic lottery. Descended from Cain, the world's first murderer, he's plagued by a curse that demands violence in exchange for his happiness. He left everything behind, including the girl he loved, but thriving on the pain of others is lonely... And it's killing him. After a series of heartbreaking losses, Samantha put rubber to pavement and headed for college as fast as her clunker could carry her. But she can't outrun her problems. When an attack at school drives her back home, she's thrown into the path of a past--and a guy--she's been trying to forget.Sam strains Jax's control over his darkness, but running isn't an option this time. Someone--or, something--followed her home from school: a ruthless monster with a twisted plan centuries in the making. Forced together to survive, and fighting an attraction that could destroy them both, Jax and Sam must stop a killer bent on revenge.

While playing around on Goodreads I came across Jus Accardo’s Ruined. This fresh take on the Cain and Abel story was a fun read. The story centers around Jax and his estranged twin brother Chase, who are the descendents of Cain. Marked with a curse, Jax was forced to leave town or kill his brother in an never-ending loop that is destined to repeat throughout history as a punishment for Cain’s sin against his brother Abel. Unfortunately, when Jax learned that his uncle is dying from cancer he is forced to return home to say good-bye to the man who raised him like a father. This wouldn’t be a problem if it wasn’t for the fact that Jax wasn’t the only one to return home. His brother Chase is eager to see Jax, and Jax’s ex-girlfriend, Sam, aka the one person it would kill him to see, just happens to be home from college.

Ruined was different from other books I’ve read in the supernatural romance genre. Sure Jax is a hot, wise-cracking, tough guy with a heart of gold, and a woman he pretends he can’t stand. Samantha is a tough chick who hides her broken heart from the world in a desperate bid to protect herself from falling back in love with the guy who broke it in the first place. However, the mythology in the story comes straight from the Bible, and is re-imagined (somewhat) for modern readers. By taking a story most of us are already familiar with (Cain & Abel) and modernizing it allows readers to feel like they understand Accardo’s world, and can focus on the mystery of who is after Samantha, and what monster needs to be stopped. One part mystery/one part romance, Ruined will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end, and just when you think you have everything figured out, you’ll discover that you’ve only scratched the surface.
