Damon: Did you think I was going to go on a rampage, slaughter a bunch of innocent people, go bowling with human heads? What'd you think I was gonna do?
Stefan: Hate me. I thought you would hate me."
With a foreword by co-creator Kevin Williamson, the fan-favorite Love You to Death series returns with an essential guide to the fifth season of The CW’s hit show The Vampire Diaries. As the series hits its 100th-episode milestone, this companion delves headlong into the twists and turns of each episode, exploring the layers of rich history, supernatural mythology, historical and pop culture references, and the complexities of the show’s memorable cast of characters. Add chapters on the making of the show, interviews with the people who bring Mystic Falls to life, and the intensely loyal audience that keeps it thriving, and you have a guide as compelling and addictive as the show itself.
Just in time for an all-new season of the CW’s, The Vampire Diaries, authors Crissy Calhoun and Heather Vee (A Visitor’s Guide to Mystic Falls) have penned yet another one of their unofficial television companion books for the hit show. Love You to Death – Season 5, is a must-have book for any fan of the vampire drama. Not only does the book provide detailed episode and music guides, but the book is chock-full of interviews of the cast and crew, as well as an updated timeline of all the events mentioned on the television series. The official synopsis according to Goodreads states:
If you are a fan of these companion books then the format of them will be familiar. The book reviews each episode and offers insight into them by commenting on the themes within the episode and as they affect the season as a whole, and how they connect to the previous seasons. However, what I particularly loved about the Season 5 addition was that the authors add a section titled, “Meanwhile, in New Orleans…” which connected the events in The Originals to what was happening in Mystic Falls. Not only was this a great reminder that these two series exist in the same universe, but it left me hopeful that the authors will create a companion to TVD’s sister show. Like the others, the season 5 guide picks out compelling moments from each episode, details who’s in the know and the significance of any pop culture references used during the course of the episode. Crissy and Vee also break down the rules of TVD’s supernatural universe, give mini history lessons, discuss continuity with previous episodes and seasons, mention “Foggy” moments that don’t quite make sense, and provide questions they were left with after viewing the episodes.
Since the show’s 100th episode aired in its fifth season, Calhoun and Vee provided an in-depth look at the monumental milestone with a bunch of interviews, antidotes, and behind-the-scenes information. The music list is always a welcome addition. Especially since The Vampire Diaries has some of the best music in network television. Lastly, the timeline in the book is a great resource for viewers to help keep all the crazy shenanigans the gang gets into straight. Complete with a foreword by Kevin Williamson, 17 exclusive interviews, photos, quotes, and much, much more, Love You to Death – Season 5 makes for a great reference book. Why try to remember every little thing when Calhoun and Vee have compiled all that info in a nice guide? Whether you’re a die-hard fan of the series, or someone interested in checking it out, this guide is a must-have!
