The Weeks in Review: “As the World Turns” (October 11th – October 17th)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews. This meme gives bloggers a chance to share with readers what we bought, borrowed, swapped, won or received for review each week. I also decided that I would do a weekly recap, and link up with The Sunday Post, which is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer, that was inspired in part by In My Mailbox. It’s a post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

Life Outside the ‘Net

Not much has been happening this past week. I’ve been working, writing, and reading. My running injury seems to be improving, so I plan to start working out again Monday. If I feel ok, then I’ll slowly start back to a routine. However, I still don’t plan to go back to long distance running this season. We’ll see how it goes.

Many of my tv shows have returned, so I’ve been using my weekends to catch up, so I can read during the week. It only works if I have nothing going on, or there’s nothing on cable I want to watch, so I hope I’m not setting myself up for failure. One show I’ve been waiting for is The Last Kingdom on BBC America. I read the books the series is based on this spring, and was hooked. Author Bernard Cornwell is a master writer. How he weaves history, political intrigue, and  mixes real life people with fictional characters is seamless. I also love his world building. It’s so rich and vivid, that I actually feel like I’m there. The second episode of the series aired last night, and so far everything is just like I imagined. If you’re interested in checking out the book series, you can see my reviews here.

I need to get back to playing. I miss Halo. I need to find a balance somehow. A little TV, a little reading, a little gaming.

I bought The Last Kingdom years ago when I used to have a Nook, because it sounded interesting and was on sale for $1.99. After 4-5 years, I finally read it, and was hooked on the book series. Sadly, he’s not finished writing them yet, but the next one comes out in January. The tv series is pretty close to the source material, but I’ve only watched the first episode. Let me know if you check it out. I’d love to know what you think.

I still need to read The Throne of Glass series. It sounds so good and I need to move it up on my TBR. I didn’t watch any TV last week because I was busy so I have a lot of catching up to do. I hope working out again goes as plan and you eventually get back to running. Have a great week!

Thanks! I hope so, too! I miss being active. I’ve been so tired during the week, that I’ve been spending my Saturdays as my TV catch-up day. I’ve pretty much caught up with everything. ToG is crazy good. I was afraid the hype would make it be disappointing, so I lowered my expectations. It was unwarranted, though, because it’s pretty kick ass. I hope you get a chance to finally check it out. Thanks for stopping by! Have a great week!

  2. Nice haul, I hope you’re enjoying the Throne of Glass series. I DNF’d the first book, but I know lots of people love that series. That’s great that your running injury is almost healed. The Last Kingdom sounds good! Have a great week!

You DNF’d? I can see that Celaena may be a love her/hate her type of character. I’m enjoying it, but I’m pretty big on warrior type books. I guess that’s why I love Game of Thrones and The Last Kingdom. TLK is a pretty good series. I’ve waited so long to read it, and when I did I mistakenly thought Cornwell had finished writing it. Wrong! Now I’m stuck waiting on the sixth book to come out. If you like historical fiction, then you may enjoy TLK. Have a great week, as well!

  3. Good for you that your injury is healing and you can start working out again!
Your new books look really good, and the covers are absolutely gorgeous 🙂
I’m catching up on TV shows, but it seems I have too many favorites… and I still prefer to read, so we shall see 🙂
    I hope you’re having a fantastic week!

My week is going pretty ok. Thank you! I hope yours is going well, too! My books are pretty good. Like you, I’m preferring to read as of late, so I’m also playing catch up with all my shows. I keep trying to cut some that no longer interest me, and manage to find some new ones. LOL!
