In the heart of Louisiana, the most powerful people in the South live behind elegant gates, mossy trees, and pleasant masks. Once every ten years, the pretense falls away and a tournament is held to determine who will rule them. The Acquisition is a crucible for the Southern nobility, a love letter written to a time when barbarism was enshrined as law.
Now, Sinclair Vinemont is in the running to claim the prize. There is only one way to win, and he has the key to do it - Stella Rousseau, his Acquisition. To save her father, Stella has agreed to become Sinclair's slave for one year. Though she is at the mercy of the cold, treacherous Vinemont, Stella will not go willingly into darkness.
As Sinclair and Stella battle against each other and the clock, only one thing is certain: The Acquisition always ends in blood.
Counsellor is the first book in author Celia Aaron’s Acquisition series, which centers around a rich family vying for control of Louisiana. To gain control they must succeed to the position of power, or suffer the consequences. As the first son, District Attorney Sinclair Vinemont has been chosen to represent his family in the Acquisition, a series of trials to determine the mettle of the next leader of the upper echelon. In order to win, Sinclair needs Stella Rousseau.
Stella is forced into a contract to be Sinclair’s slave for a year in order to save her father. Stella knows she’s bitten off more than she can chew, but has no idea what horrors await her in the trials. What’s worse, Stella must also navigate the politics of the Vinemont family if she stands a chance of surviving this ordeal. She’s a woman who’s been through a lot, and isn’t willing to give up easily. Her feisty demeanor is the perfect match for Sinclair, and leaves him wondering if he’s met his match.
“Her eyes were half mast, but locked on mine all the same. I wanted her to watch me as I brought her pleasure. The fucking barbarian who lived in my breast demanded it, demanded that she acknowledge I was the only one who could give her the release she was begging for.”
Both Sinclair and Stella are strong characters that will do whatever it takes to survive. While living in the lap of luxury, both bear witness to the seedy underbelly of high society in the deep south. What’s worse, is both feel an attraction towards one another that is strong enough to destroy them both, and ruin everything they hold dear. A tense, suspenseful read, Counsellor is hard to put down. Aaron captivates her audience from the beginning, and leaves you hungering for the next installment. I was lucky enough to read Magnate, book 2 of the series, and now eagerly anticipate the third novel, Sovereign, scheduled to release this April.
One thing that shocked me about the book was that it turned out to have a very good story. I guess I was expecting straight up word porn, and instead found myself embroiled in a mystery. What is the acquisition, and how do the rules affect everyone involved was a question that plagued me throughout the entire book. Sadly, readers don’t learn the answer to this question until the second novel. If you don’t mind a crazy cliffhanger that will leave you completely hungering for more, than by all means pick this one up. In fact, pick up book 2 while you’re at it. You won’t be sorry!
