I pretend to smile.
Two years ago my life was perfect, until it wasn’t. I scattered my wife’s ashes then walked away from the Marines. I didn’t think I had anything left to lose.
I was wrong.
The blond showed up at my surf shop, beaten and stabbed. I did what I was trained to do—I stitched her up. I didn’t have a clue who she was and I told myself I didn’t care. Until they came looking for her.
I swore I’d take my last breath before I let anyone else hurt her except I didn’t know she was keeping a deadly secret. Now I had two choices, her life or mine.
Marriage and combat taught me the same thing—I was no one’s hero. And I was about to prove it.
Sybil Bartel’s Talon is the first novel in the spin-off to her popular Unchecked Series. In the novel, we learn more about Blaze’s Marine buddy, Talon, whom we first meet in Impossible Promise. In the Unchecked Series Talon is the handsome, charismatic surfer who charms Layla much to Blaze’s chagrin. Through his relationship with Blaze and Layla, readers discover Talon has many hidden facets to his personality, and they get even more explored in his novel.
Talon is still grief-stricken over his wife’s death, and usually don’t let women get too close to him. So when a familiar blonde shows up asking for help, getting involved is the last thing he wants to do. Until he sees the bad shape she’s in. Before he knows it Talon is deep into helping this beautiful woman, and soon discovers there’s a lot more going on then he originally bargained for.
I really enjoyed the relationship in this novel. It was very complex, and had so many layers to it. I don’t want to get too much into it, as it’s a huge part of the plot. I will divulge that it kept me on my toes. I never knew what was going to happen between them, and found the romance to be as big of a mystery as Talon’s case.
Another aspect of the novel I loved was how it connected to Bartel’s Unchecked Series. Since I’m a fan of those books, I really loved seeing all of the other characters from that series transfer over. Especially since Talon is the first book of this series, with Neil coming out this fall. Plus, Blaze and Layla make an appearance. It’s really great to learn more about what happened to them after Impossible End.
Overall, I’m really excited for the Uncompromising Series, and can’t wait to read all of the boys’ books. I would recommend Talon to fans of military romance, with suspense, and loads of hot scenes. Bartel’s writing captivates you from the very first page, and leaves you wanting more. However, if you’re interested in checking this out, I would suggest starting with Impossible Promise, as several plot points from the Unchecked Series continue on in the spin-off. I think it will help with a lot of background information for this story. Though, Bartel does write Talon in a way that makes it easy to jump in as a newbie. The choice is yours!
