Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a series "so popular, I don't think there's a reader today who hasn't at least heard of [it]" (USA Today).
Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself...
For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect--or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can't understand--or control--the panic and insecurity that plague him...
And that terrifies him--as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities--and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary's. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from...
“Life didn’t have to be perfect . . . for true love to exist in it.”
I was a bit worried that The Black Dagger Brotherhood series was beginning to get too long in the tooth, but J. R. Ward proved me wrong with the fourteenth installment of this popular series. Not only do fans get the chance to catch up with Rhage and Mary, but the other characters get a lot of page-time as well. Readers get an update on the war with the Lessers, what’s going down with Xcor and the Band of Bastards, how Layla is faring with her pregnancy, and even Assail gets more story. Many of the lingering loose ends fans have been waiting to see resolved get tied up, and we also meet some new characters with important connections that will play out in future books.
Rhage is one of my favorite Brothers, and I always loved his relationship with Mary. When I first learned they would hit a few bumps in their marriage in their next novel, I was very worried. Especially with rumors all over the Internet that Rhage would be unfaithful. Luckily, these two love birds got the story they deserved, and I enjoyed the roller coaster their relationship went on. Their relationship wasn’t the only one that got more development. Layla, Qhuinn, and Blay’s impending parenthood was dealt with in a great way, and I can’t wait to see what more is in store for them in the future.
“So if you had the chance . . . even if there was no music and no ballgown, no tuxedo or gala . . . when your true love asked you to dance? It was important to say yes.”
Aside from the various relationships, the war against the Omega and the Lessers came to a major impasse this time around as the Brothers suffered a major setback. What Ward has set-up will undoubtedly pay off in a big way in the future, and I can’t wait as this storyline was beginning to get old. However, while the Lesser storyline is about to heat up, The Beast really opened up some interesting and exciting story with Throe and the Gylmera. These spoiled vamps may prove deadlier than I first believed, and I never tire of a good coup. Besides, Assail was front and center in this story, and no longer felt like the useless, extraneous character I first believed.
If you are a fan of Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood series, then you definitely don’t want to miss this one! It’s everything a fan can hope for and more, and somehow made the series feel fresh again. I’m actually excited about the future novels, and also can’t wait for the second book in the spin-off series, Black Dagger Legacy, as much was discussed about the new program by many of the characters. I’m also excited about the new character that was introduced, and curious if they will stay in this series, or wind up moving over to Legacy. I guess we’ll find out next April 🙁
