The Year in Review (2016): “Happy New Year!”

Posted January 1, 2017 by @Angelized_1st in Memes, The Sunday Post / 8 Comments

I decided that I would do a weekly recap, and link up with The Sunday Post, which is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba @ hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer, that was inspired in part by In My Mailbox. It’s a post to recap the past week, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up for the week on our blog.

2016 was a mixed bag for me. I had some awesome highs, and some dark lows. While I spent the majority of my time counting my blessings, I struggled with many of the problems that arose. After “wasting” a year thinking about what I don’t have, don’t like, and don’t want, I’ve decided to embrace 2017 as a year of change. No more bemoaning the negative. Instead, I will put my money where my mouth is and change whatever I don’t like. If I don’t, then I just need to shut up! I want to live fearlessly, love freely, and embrace change. It’s time I make my life the best it can be.

2016 book haul

Here’s all the books I acquired in 2016. This doesn’t include books I got from the library, or books I acquired previously that I only read for the first time in 2016. Below I have books I bought, won, ARCs, etc. However, I don’t have listed books I haven’t added to my TBR list that I received at the Mocha Girls Read 5th anniversary celebration, or from my cousin after she cleaned out her bookshelves (mainly books I gifted her throughout the years).

2016 Reading Challenges Wrap-Up

I was really hung ho this year to complete my challenges, but after a difficult emotional period fell off reading a bit (for me that’s 1 book a week). I also fell of requesting ARCs, or even wanting to read the ones I had. Mainly, this fall I became an emotional reader. Therefore, I fell short on several of my challenges. However, I surpassed my Goodreads challenge by 63 books, finishing the year at 163 books read.

In 2017, I’ve decided not to participate in any genre or themed challenges as I want to read all of the books I’ve acquired over that last few years that continue to linger on my shelves and eReader. Plus, I don’t want to be confined by what I read. It’s just added stress I don’t need. I’ll probably continue to participate in COYER, as well as the Mocha Girls Book Bingo, but that’s it. Still debating if I’ll set a Goodreads goal or not.

  1. I love your attitude about the new year! As someone who has been guilty of bitching a lot in 2016, maybe I should adopt your view! Nice haul of books too, I need to get to Gemina ASAP. Congrats too on your GR challenge. After sitting 2016 out I’m doing a few challenges in 2017 but keeping it simple. Have a great week!

Yeah, I think my family is tired of hearing me bitch and moan, and so am I. I’m hoping the positive attitude will bring many new positive changes my way this year. Gemina was amazing! I think I liked it more than Illuminae. Good luck to you on your challenges this year!

Happy New Year, Heather! Yeah, I figure, “what can it hurt?” Time to stop sweating the stuff I can’t change, and make 2017 the best year it can be. Good luck to you in the new year!

  2. Sorry about the lows you had in 2016, but it sounds like you’ve got a great attitude going into 2017 🙂 And it looks like you still did good on most of your challenges! But I completely understand them being stressful, that’s why I don’t participate in any except GR. Good luck with whatever you participate in and Happy New Year!

I guess I hit where you were a few months back Kristen. Blogging is my hobby, and fun, so I should stop making it not fun by uncessisarily stressing out over it. Happy New Year!
