After a year-long hiatus, HBO’s Game of Thrones finally returns for its 3rd season. While the season 2 finale “Valar Morghulis” meant “All Men Must Die,” the season 3 premiere “Valar Dohaeris” means “All Men Must Serve,” and is the response given when “Valar Morghulis” is spoken. Jaquen H’gar taught Aria Stark this, and though we don’t see her in tonight’s episode, those we did see acted out this phrase in their own way.
Glory Seeker…When we last saw Jon Snow he had been taken captive by the Wildlings. In tonight’s episode he finally was brought before the King Beyond the Wall, Mance Rayder. Jon joined the Night’s Watch because he felt he had no future if he stayed at Winterfell since he’s a bastard, and wanted to seek glory. Instead he discovered the men of the Night’s Watch are servants who serve the people of Westeros, and keep them safe from White Walkers and Wildlings. Though he is actually working as a double agent to infiltrate the Wildlings to gain information for the Night’s Watch, the words Jon tell Mance are the honest truth. He was horrified by Craster offering up his sons to the White Walkers, and questions the honor of the life he’s chosen. (More…)
